"We need new forms" - A European Theatre Laboratory!

Next General Assembly, Zagreb, Croatia, 24 - 27 October
The next ETC General Assembly hosted by the Zagreb Youth Theatre z/k/m (Croatia) is due to take place in Zagreb, from October 24-27. The conference is entitled: " WE NEED NEW FORMS* - A European Theatre Laboratory!, *as quoted already Chekhov's “The Seagull”, expressing the urgent need to re-imagine theatre in Europe's cities today new and different, affirming its role in society within the digital age.

Confirmed speakers include Karel Bartak, European Commission, to inform about the latest news of the Creative Europe programme,  Bailey Lock to represent the new Secret Theatre of the Lyric Hammersmith, London and young artists of the ETC Spring Theatre Tour Ensemble, who will further develop with ETC member theatres joint ideas on new forms - A European Theatre Laboratory.

New Research Theatre Project
The Art of Ageing
The ETC is developing the new EU co-funded project “The Art of Ageing” with the support of the programme Culture of the European Commission.The project will run for 2 years. Eight ETC partner theatres will coproduce 4 new theatre plays researching the impact of an ageing population in Europe. Premieres of the plays start in autumn 2014.  The participating theatres are:
Theater und Orchester Heidelberg (DE) - Gavella drama Theatre Zagreb (HR), Deutsches Theater Berlin (DE) – Slovenske Narodne Divadlo Bratislava (SK), Staatstheater Braunschweig (DE) - National Theatre Craiova „Marin Sorescu“ (RO), Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe (DE) - Timisoara National Theatre (RO).

The artistic prologue, based on a text by the Lebanese artist Etel Adnan will open the project and premiere on October 17th at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Germany. A first partner meeting is going to take place the week after on October 23rd and 24th at the Gavella City Drama Theatre in Zagreb.

Audiences for European theatre
An Audience Development Study in collaboration with the Free University Berlin, Germany
The ETC has commissioned the Free University Berlin with an audience study for European theatres in order to tackle the lack of data about the sector on an EU-wide level. The study will be two-fold: ETC member theatres collect existing data on audience habits and good practices. In addition, eight theatres across Europe togehter with the ETC and the researchers will develop  tailor made audience development strategies for existing but also non-existing audiences.
The expected result will be a first publication on existing data, expected by the end of the year. A second publication with recommendations on audience development strategies is to be expected before the end of the season 2013/2014.

Audience Development for European Theatres in a Digital era
ETC Week - celebrating the 25th Anniversary of ETC, 3 - 10 November
On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, the ETC and its member theatres encourage  a European future-oriented debate on Audience development for European theatres in the digital era during one week. Throughout this week, each of the member theatres across Europe will organise an evening with discusssions, performances and celebrations to start discourses and exchanges about the challenges each theatre experiences but also solutions and new ideas that have been developed. Together with the audience, social media experts and theatre colleagues from different theatres, the debates and events will be shared online.

MEMBERS CORNER
National Theatre of Craiova (Romania)
The prominent director László Bocsárdi stages the play "The Tót family" by the Hungarian playwright István Örkény at the National Theatre of Craiova. The premiere will take place on September 22, 2013.

HESSISCHES STAATSTHEATER WIESBADEN (Germany)
The theatre season 2013/14 under the artistic direction of Manfred Beilharz has 14 new productions with two world premieres. The season opens with the premiere of Mr. Marmalade on 12th September.

International Theatber Festival MESS (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
The 53rd edition of the MESS International Theatre Festival will take place 28th September through to 7th October 2013. Twenty-three groupes from seventeen countries were invited. Sarajevo will host more than 400 international artists again this year.  
The audience will, among other things, be able to enjoy Booty Looting by Wim Vanderkeybus, King Size by the famous Swiss director Christoph Marthaler, Te invencibile con mi derrota, by the world renowned performance artist Angelica Liddell or one of the most successful performances from the region The Seagull, directed by Tomi Janežić.

ETC Spring Theatre Tour
Stay tuned to follow the ETC Spring Theatre Tour Ensemble across Europe.
Soon the interactive video documentary will be launched tracing the path of the ETC Spring Theatre Tour. In April 2013, the ETC invited theatre makers, young artists and theatre critics on to a unique bus journey across Europe, stopping within 7 days, in 7 countries visiting 8 theatres and watching multiple performances. CREATIVE EUROPE
CREATIVE EUROPE, the new Culture Programme of the European Commission, proposed on November 23rd 2011, is still being discussed and finalized by the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament. On July 3rd the European Parliament agreed upon the EU budget for the period 2014 – 2020. In the fall of Autumn 2013, the final programme should be finally adopted. Read more
European Culture Forum 2013 in Brussels
On the 4th, 5th and 6th of November, the European Commission organizes the European Culture Forum 2013 to bring together cultural policy makers, stakeholders, artists and cultural professionals.
The forum will discuss three main topics:
Measuring the true value of culture, Funding culture in the digital era and Audience development – making cultural participation a reality.
The programme will include a variety of formats: plenary panels for in-depth discussions, short flash sessions to inform participants of other hot topics, and much more... The registration is open until September 16th.
