Manfred Beilharz, founder of the Theatre Biennale NEW PLAYS FROM EUROPE (together with Tankred Dorst and Ursula Ehler) at Staatstheater Wiesbaden, announces his new team of Artistic Directors for the next edition of the festival: Ann-Marie Arioli, festival dramaturge and currently working at the Theatre Chur (Switzerland), the Frankfurt writer and journalist Peter Michalzik and Manfred Beilharz are the Artistic directors of the next edition of NEW PLAYS FROM EUROPE.

Tankred Dorst and Ursula Ehler remain connected to the festival.

The theatre biennale NEW PLAYS FROM EUROPE takes place between 19th – 29th June 2014 at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden.

Theatrical Highlights from Around the World – Internationale Maifestspiele 2013 at Staatstheater Wiesbaden

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 21



27 April to 31 May 2013

From 27 April to 31 May, the 117th edition of the Internationale Maifestspiele (International May Festival), under the artistic direction of Dr. Manfred Beilharz, will transform the city of Wiesbaden into a stage showcasing international theatre treasures. Theatre fans in Wiesbaden can experience 35 festival days featuring 36 productions from 15 countries and 8 German premieres throughout the month of May. Directors, singers, dancers and actors of international standing are set to perform in several Staatstheater venues. Thus, star tenor Klaus Florian Vogt is assuming the title role of the operatic gala Lohengrin as a part of the Wagner Year, and renowned countertenor Max Emanuel Cencic is starring in Händel’s Alessandro in a production by Parnassus Arts Productions from Greece. The dance program features five works of choreography celebrating their German premieres, including Les Balletts de Monte-Carlo with Le Songe (The Dream) by Jean-Christophe Maillot and Compagnie Käfig with Yo Gee Ti, a dance production by Mourad Merzouki. With actors such as August Diehl in Burgtheater Vienna’s production of Kleist’s The Prince of Homburg, Ulrich Matthes in Oedipus’ City from Deutsches Theater Berlin and Michael Maertens in Molière’s The Misanthrope from Schauspielhaus Zürich, a variety of exceptional performers have been invited to the Wiesbaden stage as well. This year’s Maifestspiele will kick off with the festive opening production Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht staged by Manfred Beilharz with musical direction by Zsolt Hamar.

ETC FLAGSHIP PROJECT FEATURED IN MAJOR EUROPEAN CONFERENCE

ETC’s flagship project, Young Europe 2: Multilingual Creation and Education in Theatre was presented as a model of best practice at a major conference organised by the European Commission in Brussels earlier this month and entitled ‘Culture in Motion: European Audiences 2020 and Beyond’. The project was also part of the conference's main exhibition while President of the ETC, Dubravka Vrgoč, gave a presentation on  Young Europe 2 in a panel titled "Hosting the audience: Cultural institutions under the microscope".

Ghetto Premieres at the Cameri

Ghetto, a play by Joshua Sobol describing daily life in the Vilna Ghetto and the theatre company created there under impossible conditions, premiered at the Cameri Theatre on March 8, directed by Omri Nitzan. For Noam Semel, Director of the Cameri, the play has come full circle - it was first produced at the Haifa Theatre in 1984, when Semel was its director.

ETC confirms Jean-Claude Berutti as President and introduces new Board of Directors

Jean-Claude Berutti, artistic director of the Comédie de Saint Etienne, France has been re-elected president during the General Assembly held in Poznan, Poland. Together with its new Board of Directors, comprised of well-known representatives of eight national theatres of five European countries, Berutti will be leading the ETC until 2011 with the objective to strengthen the network on a political level, to intensify the relations with the future theatre audience and to encourage the intercultural dialogue between theatre professionals through outstanding common artistic projects.
