International Theatre Festival MESS was founded in 1960 and was initially named The Festival of Small and Experimental Stages. During the first decades the Festival presented the most important theatre directors from Yugoslavia as well as some of the most prominent experimental theatre makers of the time like the Living Theatre from New York.

The Festival kept it's continuity and vitality during the Siege of Sarajevo from 1992 to 1995. During the Siege MESS produced performances directed by some of the most important intellectuals and theatre makers in the world like Susan Sontag and Peter Schumann.

A concept of the Festival as an international meeting point for theatre makers from all over the world starts to take shape in 1997. With time it has become one of the most important cultural events in Southeast Europe. Guests of the Festival have been Peter Brook, Giorgio Strehler, Robert Wilson, Eugenio Barba, Josef Nadj, Roberto Ciulli, Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, Eimuntas Nekrošius, Oscaras Koršunovas, Alvis Hermanis, Olivier Py, Mark Tompkins, Włodzimierz Staniewski, Simon McBurney, Arpad Schilling, Christoph Marthaler, Frank Castorf, Thomas Ostermeier, Ariel Garcia Valdes, Andriy Zholdak, Rimas Tuminas, Jürgen Gosch, Emma Dante, Pippo Delbono, Kama Ginkas, Dimiter Gotscheff, Stefan Kaegi, Mark Ravenhill, Grzegorz Bral, Silviu Purcărete, Alain Platel, Emio Greco, Romeo Castellucci, Heiner Goebbels, Jan Lauwers and many others.

The Festival broadened and changed it's concept in year 2008, becoming an impressive competitive festival with more than 35 performances per edition and 5 main programmes: World MESS, Mittel Europe, Future MESS, Children MESS and Mess Premieres. The Festival is annual and happens each year in October.

Since 1993 MESS has produced and co-produced more than 40 theatre performances and in year 2014 it decided to form it's own production house- MESS Scene. With different co-producers from Bosnia and Herzegovina and abroad MESS creates 4-6 theatre productions per year. MESS Scene focuses on dicovering new theatre names in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region and on their international promotion.
