Workshop in Oslo

 © Det Norske Teatret Oslo

“The aim of our meeting in Oslo 13th -15th May was twofold: to examine the first draft of the play THE ISLAND by Laura Lomas and secondly to give an opportunity for our Norwegian performers to meet the creative team and respond to the text and the notion of a play for the classroom. Both Nina and Thomas hugely impressed the English party both with their comprehension of the text and an excellent reading in English. Our subsequent discussion explored many possible areas of development. Susannah then gave our Norwegian colleagues an opportunity to explore physically some of the conventions of playing that we developed back in Nottingham in March. Morten then was able to contrast those principles with a very different set of approaches to the text and the physical space within which it will be performed. The second day included a much longer conversation between the writer and directors, a school visit for the designer (Parveen) and pedagogue (Andrew) with host Ola Boe. The actors then introduced us to their musical skills (very impressive) in creating atmospheres which the play may create musically. Our day concluded with a review of the text from educational principles based on the evidence of the morning in schools. We were also able to enjoy two splendid performances of JUNGLE BOOK and FOREVER YOUNG.” Andrew Breakwell
